In some
conditions the planer will produce a smoother surface if the planer
is forced to move down the timber crooked or at an angle.
This can be done by pushing the rear of the planer all the way
to one side. The planer is now "crabbing" its way down
the timber. The planer can be kept in this "crab" position
by using a clamp on the rear surface as a rear guide.
